The National Policy of Education -1986 envisaged the establishment of pace – setting schools in various parts of the country. Accordingly a scheme was formulated under which it was decided to set up residential schools called Navodaya Vidyalayas on an average of one in each district. The school allotted for Pathanamthitta District started functioning in the Government High School, Mannadissala, Vechoochira. Subsequently it was shifted to the adjacent permanent site, which covers 23 acres of land. It stands in full dazzle with the green mountains that surround it.
Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Vechoochira, Pathanamthitta was established in November 1986. The objective of the Vidyalaya is to provide free education of high quality to the talented students of the district, hailing predominantly from rural areas . Students are selected on the basis of a competitive Selection Test conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education , New Delhi . Selected students are provided free boarding facilities, text books, stationery etc. Students who are studying in Class V in recognized schools of the district are eligible to appear for the Entrance Examination to Class VI, subject to fulfillment of the conditions laid down by the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti.
